Codependent, an innovative table design by Fletcher Eshbaugh, merges psychology and design into a unique category termed AnimaForma. This piece, inspired by the psychological condition of codependency, is a physical manifestation of the concept, with two interlocking tables that rely on each other to function.
The inspiration for Codependent stemmed from Eshbaugh's fascination with the profound role psychological conditions play in individuals' lives. Often unnoticed by those affected, these conditions can be a source of unresolved discomfort. Through this design, Eshbaugh hopes to spark a broader conversation about mental health, psychology, and well-being.
Codependent stands out due to its unique properties. The two interlocking tables, each incapable of standing on their own, create a more stable form when combined, echoing the psychological condition of codependency. This design was handmade in a Brooklyn workshop using Ash as the only material, showcasing the designer's commitment to craftsmanship.
As an eccentric yet everyday coffee table, the black form creates the larger of the two surfaces and serves as the primary tabletop. The white form that pierces the black creates a basin that can be used as a valet for special objects or a vessel for a centerpiece, adding an element of functionality to the design.
The design process for Codependent began in November 2017 and was completed in July 2019. It debuted as a feature on Core77.com, Design-milk.com, and in Home & Design Trends 9th Anniversary Special Issue. The project involved extensive research on the condition of codependency and how it could physically manifest itself in the form of a table. This research, coupled with consultations with engineers to ensure table stability, resulted in a design that is as thoughtful as it is functional.
Codependent was awarded the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
